Coverage / Casualty
Employees' compensation
Compulsory does not mean standard.
Cover required under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (Cap. 282), with common law liability.

01 Scope
What it may cover
Subject to wording. Insurers differ; a sound policy answers these three points.
Statutory compensation for injury or death arising out of and in the course of employment.
Common law damages where the employer is found negligent.
Employees on business travel abroad.
02 Placement
What affects price and terms
Underwriters price what they can see. These facts come first, so we present them before they ask.
Payroll by occupation class, separating office, site and manual work.
Use of subcontractors and labour supplied through agencies.
Injury frequency and return-to-work arrangements.
Staff working at height, on vessels or with heavy machinery.
03 The underwriting file
What we need from you
- Payroll by job category for the current and prior year.
- Headcount by location and role.
- Five years of claims with current reserves.
- Safety management certifications and incident logs.
A complete file reaches more markets and returns firmer terms. Gaps are priced as uncertainty.
04 At renewal
Common gaps at renewal
01Payroll declared at last year's figure
Premium is adjusted on actual payroll. Underdeclaring defers the cost and invites a dispute.
02Subcontractor staff assumed to be someone else's
Under Cap. 282 a principal contractor can be liable for a subcontractor's workers.
03Staff on business travel
Injuries abroad can still fall under Cap. 282. The territorial wording must reach employees while travelling.
